Yes, sea moss naturally contains minerals, but not enough on its own to replace a real electrolyte drink. Seaweed is about 15% minerals by dry weight, so a spoonful adds a little magnesium, calcium, potassium and trace elements. To actually replace what you lose in sweat, you need meaningful amounts of sodium, potassium and magnesium. That's why we use sea moss as a whole-food layer on top of a complete electrolyte base, not instead of one.
Why whole-food minerals matter to us
Many people in the natural-health world prefer getting minerals from whole foods rather than from long lists of isolated compounds. Sea moss, a red seaweed (Chondrus crispus) gathered on Atlantic coastlines for generations, has been part of that tradition for well over a century (overview). We include organic Irish sea moss for the trace minerals it brings from the ocean, then build the real electrolyte load around it.

| Sodium | 1,000mg | Himalayan rock salt |
| Potassium | 800mg | Potassium chloride |
| Magnesium | 100mg | Magnesium glycinate (gentle on the stomach) |
| Calcium / Phosphorus | 36mg / 20mg | Dicalcium phosphate |
| Taurine | 1g | Amino acid |

Why we add taurine
Taurine is one of the body's main "organic osmolytes," compounds cells use to manage their water and mineral balance and to restore their volume when that balance is disrupted (Lambert et al., Acta Physiologica, 2015; Schaffer et al., 2010). That's exactly the job we want hydration to do at the cellular level.
Taurine is also getting attention for longevity. A 2023 study in Science found taurine levels fall with age in mice, monkeys and humans (people in their 60s had about a third of the levels of young children), and that restoring taurine extended healthy lifespan in mice and improved health markers in monkeys (Columbia University, 2023). These were animal studies, and the researchers say human trials are still needed, but it's one more reason we think taurine belongs in a daily drink.
Sea moss vs. a full electrolyte drink
- Sea moss alone: a whole-food source of trace minerals and fiber. Great as an addition, but low in sodium and potassium.
- Typical electrolyte mix: salt and potassium, but often with synthetic sweeteners, dyes, "natural flavors" or anti-caking agents.
- Kaizen Hydration: a full electrolyte base, plus sea moss and taurine, and none of the extras we'd rather leave out.
Frequently asked questions
Does sea moss have electrolytes?
Yes, small amounts of naturally occurring minerals like magnesium, calcium and potassium. Not enough to replace an electrolyte drink after heavy sweating.
Can I just add sea moss to water instead of electrolytes?
It adds trace minerals, but you'd miss most of the sodium and potassium your body loses in sweat.
What does taurine do in an electrolyte drink?
Taurine helps cells regulate their water and mineral balance. Kaizen includes 1g per stick.
How much sea moss is in Kaizen Hydration?
250mg of organic Irish sea moss per stick.
