Yes, calcium is an electrolyte — here's what that means
An electrolyte is simply a mineral that carries an electrical charge once it dissolves in the fluid in your body. That charge is what makes nerve signaling and muscle movement possible. Sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate and calcium all qualify.
Calcium's role in that group is specific and non-negotiable. When a nerve signal arrives at a muscle fiber, calcium ions are what allow the contraction to actually happen — the filaments inside the fiber slide across each other only after calcium is released. Then calcium has to be pumped back out for the muscle to relax. Every heartbeat, every step, every rep runs on that cycle. Cedars-Sinai and the Cleveland Clinic both list calcium among the body's core electrolytes for exactly this reason.
So the question isn't whether calcium belongs in the electrolyte category. It clearly does. The question is whether you lose enough of it during a normal day to bother replacing it.
How much calcium do you actually lose in sweat?
Here is where we'd rather be straight with you than oversell.
Sodium dominates sweat by a wide margin. Published ranges put sodium losses somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 to 148 mEq per liter of sweat, while calcium comes in around 1 to 8 mEq per liter. That is not a rounding error, but it is not remotely the same scale either. Anyone telling you that a single gym session drains your calcium stores is stretching it.
What changes the math is volume and repetition. A person doing 90 minutes of hot yoga four times a week, an ultra-endurance athlete, a roofer working through July, a firefighter in full turnout gear — these are people producing liters of sweat, repeatedly, over months. Researchers studying soldiers and firefighters have flagged sweat calcium loss as a real variable in bone health, while also being upfront that there is no agreed-upon threshold for how much is too much.
That's the honest state of the science: the loss is real, the magnitude is modest, and the threshold is undefined.
The bone question: what the research says, and what it doesn't
There's a specific hypothesis that gets cited a lot in this space, and it deserves a careful look rather than a headline.
The theory goes like this: sweating pulls calcium out of your blood, your body detects the dip, parathyroid hormone rises to correct it, and PTH corrects it by pulling calcium out of bone. Repeat that thousands of times across a training career and you get lower bone mineral density.
Some evidence supports it. Cycling studies have shown markers of bone breakdown rising over roughly two hours of exercise without a matching rise in bone-formation markers — a net resorptive state, at least acutely. But it doesn't hold everywhere. A study of 90 minutes of Bikram hot yoga, an unusually sweaty stimulus, found that the calcium lost in sweat did not trigger a PTH increase and did not appear to kick off bone resorption at all.
The reasonable read: this mechanism most likely matters at endurance and ultra-endurance volumes, and probably isn't doing much to someone who lifts three times a week. We include calcium because the downside of covering it is negligible and the upside is real for people training at the far end of that range — not because we think your bones are dissolving on the elliptical.
Why most electrolyte powders skip calcium
Three practical reasons, none of them flattering to the industry. Calcium salts are bulkier and less soluble than sodium chloride or potassium chloride, so meaningful calcium means more powder per scoop and more risk of grit at the bottom of the bottle. Sodium is also the hero mineral of the current hydration boom — it's the number on the front of the packet, and calcium doesn't have that pull. And every additional mineral is another input, another sourcing relationship, and another flavor problem to solve without reaching for artificial masking agents.

What calcium in your water can't do
An electrolyte scoop is not a calcium supplement, and we won't pretend otherwise.
Your body caps how much calcium it absorbs from a single dose — commonly cited figures land in the 200–400 mg range at one sitting, regardless of how much you take. Phosphorus digestibility from dicalcium phosphate has been measured around 50% in animal work, so not every milligram lands either. And bone density is built over years by resistance training, adequate protein, vitamin D, vitamin K2 and total dietary calcium. A drink mix supports that. It does not replace it.
If you have kidney disease, take a thiazide diuretic, or have a history of calcium-oxalate kidney stones, calcium and phosphate intake is something to run past your doctor rather than self-manage.
